Day 5: Visiting South Gate of Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat in Siem Reap City

Today, you will spend a full day exploring the South Gate of Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat temples.

In the morning visiting Angkor Thom area:

You will visit some highlight architectures of Angkor Thom area such as: the impressive Bayon Temple, Royal Enclosures, The Terrace of the Elephants, The Terrace of the Leper King, Phimeanakas Temple,  Ta Prohm Temple…

Angkor Thom is a temples complex at Angkor, located in Siem Reap City, present-day Cambodia which lies on the west bank of the Siem Reap River, a tributary of Tonle Sap, about a quarter of a mile from the river. The south gate of Angkor Thom is 7.2 km north of Siem Reap City, and 1.7 km north of the entrance to Angkor Wat. It was the last and most enduring capital city of the Khmer empire. It was established in the late twelfth century by King Jayavarman VII.

The Bayon Temple was built in the late 12th or early 13th century as the official state temple of King Jayavarman VII, the Bayon stands at the centre of Angkor Thom. The Bayon's most distinctive feature is the multitude of serene and smiling stone faces on the many towers which jut out from the upper terrace and cluster around its central peak. The temple is known also for two impressive sets of bas-reliefs, which present an unusual combination of mythological, historical, and mundane scenes.

The Terrace of the Elephants is part of the walled city of Angkor Thom. The terrace was used by Angkor's king Jayavarman VII as a platform from which to view his victorious returning army. The terrace is named for the carvings of elephants on its eastern face. The 350m-long Terrace of Elephants was used as a giant reviewing stand for public ceremonies and served as a base for the king's grand audience hall. It has five outworks extending towards the Central Square-three in the centre and one at each end. The middle section of the retaining wall is decorated with life size garuda and lions; towards either end are the two parts of the famous parade of elephants complete with their Khmer mahouts.

The Terrace of the Leper King is located in the northwest corner of the Royal Square of Angkor Thom. It was built in the Bayon style under Jayavarman VII, though its modern name derives from a 15th-century sculpture discovered at the site.

Phimeanakas Temple (celestial temple) is a Hindu temple in the Khleang style, built at the end of the 10th century, during the reign of Rajendravarman II (from 941-968), then completed by Suryavarman II in the shape of a three tier pyramid as a Hindu temple. On top of the pyramid there was a tower, while on the edge of top platform there are galleries. Phimeanakas is located inside the walled enclosure of the Royal Palace of Angkor Thom north of Baphuon Temple. The tower must originally have been crowned with a golden pinnacle, as Zhou Daguan described it in his report. According to legend, the king spent the first watch of every night with a woman thought to represent a Nāga in the tower, during that time, not even the queen was permitted to intrude. Only in the second watch the king returned to his palace with the queen. If the naga who was the supreme land owner of Khmer land did not show up for a night, the king's day would be numbered, if the king did not show up, calamity would strike his land.

Ta Prohm Temple was built in the late 12th and early 13th centuries and originally called Rajavihara. Located approximately one kilometre east of Angkor Thom and on the southern edge of the East Baray, it was founded by the Khmer King Jayavarman VII as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery and university. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Ta Prohm is in much the same condition in which it was found: the photogenic and atmospheric combination of trees growing out of the ruins and the jungle surroundings have made it one of Angkor's most popular temples with visitors. UNESCO inscribed Ta Prohm Temple on the World Heritage List in 1992. Today, it is one of the most visited complexes in Cambodia’s Angkor region. There are enormous Fig Trees and gigantic Creepers which embraces themselves in the stone foundations of the structure giving the impression of Ta Prohm Temples.

In the afternoon visiting Angkor Wat area:

You will visit largest Hindu Temple on earth as well as most of temples of Angkor Wat. You will have a stroll around this massive edifice to learn more about Angkor Wat.

Angkor Wat is a temples complex at Angkor, located in Siem Reap City present-day Cambodia. which lies 5.5 kilometres (3.4 mi) north of Siem Reap City and 1.7 km from Angkor Thom. It is the largest religious monument in the world, on a site measuring 162.6 hectares (1,626,000 m2; 402 acres). As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious center since its foundation — first Hindu, dedicated to the god Shiva, then Buddhist. It was established in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II.

Banteay Srei Temple was built in 10th-century, located in north-east of Angkor Thom, around 30km from Angkor Thom. This temple dedicated to the Hindu God - Shiva.

Banteay Srei is built largely of red sandstone, a medium that lends itself to the elaborate decorative wall carvings which are still observable today. The buildings themselves are miniature in scale, unusually so when measured by the standards of Angkorian construction. These factors have made the temple extremely popular with tourists, and have led to its being widely praised as a "precious gem", or the "jewel of Khmer art".

Eastern Mebon Temple is located in north-east of Angkor Wat, around 10km from Angkor War. This temple was dedicated to the Hindu god - Shiva and honors the parents of the king. Its location reflects Khmer architects’ concern with orientation and cardinal directions.

Eastern Mebon Temple was built in 10th-century during the reign of King Rajendravarman. The materials includes the full beautiful durable construction materials of Khmer people such as: sandstone, brick, laterite and stucco. At the top is a central tower on a square platform, surrounded by four smaller towers at the platform’s corners.

The sculptures at the Eastern Mebon Temple are varied and exceptionality, carving is particularly elegant, including two-meter-high free-standing stone elephants at corners of the first and second tiers. Religious scenes include the god Indra atop his three-headed elephant....

Pre Rup Temple is located in north-east of Angkor Wat, around 9km from Angkor War. This temple was built in the mid-10th-century. It is a temple mountain of combined brick, laterite and sandstone construction. The temple’s name is a comparatively modern one meaning "turn the body".

Srah Srang Reservoir is located in north-east of Angkor Wat, around 8km from Angkor War. Srah Srang Reservoir was dug in the mid-10th century, by initiative of Kavindrarimathana, Buddhist minister of Rajendravarman II. Srah Srang was also amended in 1200 by Jayavarman VII who also added the laterite landing-stage at its western side.

Banteay Kdei Temple is located in north-east of Angkor Wat, around 7km from Angkor War. This temple was built in the mid-12th to early 13th centuries AD during the reign of Jayavarman VII (who was posthumously given the title "Maha paramasangata pada"), it is in the Bayon architectural style, similar in plan to Ta Prohm and Preah Khan, but less complex and smaller. Its structures are contained within two successive enclosure walls, and consist of two concentric galleries from which emerge towers, preceded to the east by a cloister. This temple is a Buddhist temple (Khmer language: Prasat Banteay Kdei means "A Citadel of Chambers", and also known as "Citadel of Monks' cells".

Prasat Kravan Temple was built in 10th-century, located in north-east of Angkor Wat, around 5km from Angkor War, consisting of five reddish brick towers. The temple was dedicated to Vishnu God according to an inscription on doorjambs.

The sanctuary's interiors are remarkable for the large bas-relief depictions of Vishnu and Lakshmi that have been carved into the walls of reddish brick, connected by a vegetable compound. This type of sculptured artwork is rather common in Cham temples, but rare in known Khmer monuments

In the afternoon you will visit Chong Khneas’s floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake, located 10 kilometers to the south of Siem Reap City.

Tonle Sap Lake is a largest fresh-water lake in Combodia and South East Asia, and it is also one of the largest lakes in Asia. its water flows into the Tonle Sap River and it will be incorporated with the great Mekong River in Phnom Penh City, Cambodia.
